What My Dog’s Daycare Taught Me About Creating FOMO in Your Career

What My Dog’s Daycare Taught Me About Creating FOMO in Your Career

Let’s talk about something a little unexpected—my dog’s daycare. Yep, my greyhound heads to doggie daycare when I have long client days, and honestly, I think they might have more fun than I do sometimes. They don’t just lounge around; they have themed events like a St. Pawtrick’s Day party, a Puppy Love Bowl for the Super Bowl, an Easter egg hunt, and just this last week on April 30th (National Tie-Dye Day), they had a tie-dye bandana party. Yes, really! All these events - for a minimal extra charge $10-$15 - did I sign my boy up- you bet! He can't be the only dog missing out.

So what does this have to do with our industry? A lot, actually.

These events are about more than just cute photos—they create connection, community, and a little something we all know as FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). And guess what? Your clients feel the same way.

When you create experiences—whether you’re a solo esthetician, massage therapist, nail tech, or work in a team environment—you’re giving your clients a reason to come back and something to talk about. People love being part of something fun, exclusive, and a little unexpected.

This doesn’t mean you have to throw a full-blown party every month. It can be as simple as:
    •    A Mother’s Day "Flowers & Chocolate" package
    •    Memorial Day weekend specials with red, white, and blue-themed treatments - honoring our Veterans.
    •    A Flag Day mini-service with patriotic flair
    •    A Fourth of July add-on with glittery shimmer
    •    Or yes—even a Tie-Dye Day where clients can wear something fun and get a little extra perk with their service

You can build in up-charges for extras or create limited-edition service menus around these dates. If you work for someone else, bring these ideas to your manager or team. They’ll likely be thrilled to have fresh ways to engage clients.

The key takeaway? Take a look at the calendar—not just the obvious holidays, but the fun ones too—and find ways to inject excitement into your business. Keep your clients curious, engaged, and talking about you.

Because if my dog can go to a tie-dye party, your clients deserve a little something extra too.
